Melinda Morrell-Wilson

Businesses don't always need a well-trafficked storefront.  For entrepreneurs like Melinda Morrell-Wilson, a small home office and a large supply of business savvy will do.

A single mother, Melinda was working to make ends meet as a medical biller and attending college full time. She heard about homebased beauty sales business opportunities from a friend, and decided to restart her career as an independent sales woman.

Melinda MorrellMelinda hasn't looked back since. Today, she's a college graduate and the owner of a small business that helps her to financially care for her family, fulfill her personal goals and spend more time with her two youngest children. "The career I've chosen in beauty sales is a wonderful one. It has helped me to grow in every aspect, personally and professionally. It has come from being surrounded by "a family of successful women" who motivate, inspire and encourage me onto success, she said. "Something I believe is hard to find and obtain - owning a business for yourself, but never alone in it," she adds.

However, like any business owner, Melinda faced challenges when she was getting off the ground. When she visited several local banking institutions and inquired about making a loan for inventory purposes, she was told by each of them that she would not be provided one because of her past credit history. "I came to ACCION because they had flexible requirements and most of it, they offered more than just a loan. They were willing to help me build my credit and business," she explains.

The pride that Melinda feels from business ownership has tricked down to her daughter. Witnessing her mother's accomplishments, she continued her education and graduated from New York University this past summer. "It also has undoubtedly helped me to change the lives of the countless women I come in contact with on a social, spiritual and financial level," says Melinda.
